Cassowary Coast Regional Council – Australia Day 2020
January 26, 2020 @ 7:30 am - 12:00 pmFree
The official Australia Day ceremony on the Cassowary Coast will show the true Aussie spirit and raise much needed funds for the National Bushfire appeal.
Cassowary Coast has faced its own share of natural disasters with two of the biggest cyclones to hit Australia Cyclone Larry in 2006 and Cyclone Yasi in 2011 both making landfall in the Cassowary Coast region.
Mayor John Kremastos said “At the time of those two natural disasters Australians stepped up to help the Cassowary Coast community. This is a way for the community of the Cassowary Coast to reciprocate that great spirit of generosity and let our mates down south know – ‘we are with you; we are with you right now, and we are with you for the long road ahead’.
The annual ceremony which will include Citizenship ceremonies and the Australia Day awards to recognise local community achievers, will also be used as a fundraiser for the recovery of those affected communities after the devastating bushfires.
The Local Disaster Management Group for the Cassowary Coast, who’s membership consist of local firefighters, police, ambulance, hospital, National Parks and Wildlife Service, Maritime Safety and SES will all come together on Australia Day to assist with collecting donations.
All donations will go to the Salvation Army Bushfire Appeal.
37 local heroes have been nominated for Australia Day awards over 13 categories, which include Citizen and Young Citizen of the Year, cultural, community, sporting achievement, innovation and sustainable environment awards.
The formal proceedings will conclude with the cutting of the Australia Day cake by the Cassowary Coast 2020 Citizen of the Year. The Tully Tigers Rugby Leagues Club will fire up the barbecues for a free breakfast BBQ and the String Family will provide entertainment, fun and games.
Cr Kremastos said he hoped Cassowary Coast residents would take this opportunity to come together to celebrate Australia with mateship and fun and take a moment to reflect upon the wonderful lifestyle and freedoms our democracy provides us.
“Australia Day provides a meaningful opportunity to celebrate what is great about our nation, our beautiful Cassowary Coast region and the people who live here.
“This year we will reflect even more on the meaning of mateship and coming together to help our mates down south doing it tough,” said Cr Kremastos said.
Australia Day will start with a free public Aussie Breakfast commencing 7.30am followed by the Australia Day Awards and Naturalisation Ceremonies commencing at 9am at the Tully Multipurpose Centre, Tully State High School, Bruce Highway, on Sunday 26 January 2020.
